Why a Bespoke Joinery Business Ran for 28 Years Without One

Joinery Limited was founded by Jason Iddon in Longton, Preston, in 1998. In the years that followed, something predictable happened: the work was good, clients talked, and the phone kept ringing. Then it kept ringing more. By the time having a website became something every business was expected to do, we were already booked out months ahead on the strength of referrals alone.

That remained the situation for the better part of three decades. When your forward order book is full and new enquiries are arriving faster than you can take them, a website feels like a solution to a problem you do not have. So we did not build one. We built kitchens instead.

The Domain

The Running Joke That Lasted Twenty Years

We registered joinery.co.uk in 1996, two years before the business formally launched. At the time, it seemed sensible to secure it. For a few years in the early 2000s, there was something on here: a basic page, a phone number, a brief description of what we did. Then we took it down, because it seemed to generate more questions than it answered and the phone already rang plenty without it.

What followed was nearly two decades of nothing. Not neglect, exactly. Just a domain that sat quietly, renewed every year, waiting for a moment that kept not arriving.

The domain, however, did not sit quietly in every other respect. We found ourselves regularly explaining to people, clients, suppliers, other tradespeople, why joinery.co.uk had nothing on it. "You own joinery.co.uk and you don't have a website?" became a sentence we heard more times than we care to count. At some point, the cumulative time spent explaining the absence of a website began to rival the amount of time it would have taken to build one. This is, admittedly, not a great position to be in.

The Work That Never Waits

One thing that has never changed, website or not, is our approach to urgent work. Alongside the planned commissions, the handmade kitchens, the staircases, the orangeries, we have always kept capacity for work that needs doing quickly.

A door that will not close properly. A window frame that has warped or let water in. Structural joinery that needs attention before the weather gets inside and turns a modest repair into an expensive one. These are not the most glamorous commissions, but they matter, and we have always taken them seriously.

We are not plumbers. We will not be at the door within the hour on a Sunday night. But we respond promptly, we carry a modest call-out fee, and we do not turn a straightforward repair into a project that costs more than it should. The fact that we now have a website where we can say that clearly is, in itself, a mild improvement on the previous arrangement.

Why Now

Enough Was Eventually Enough

The honest answer is that we got tired of the conversation.

We have a workshop we are proud of at 5 Parkgate, Liverpool Road, Longton, where every piece of Joinery Limited work begins. We have a portfolio that speaks for itself. We have clients across Lancashire and well beyond who come back because the standard does not slip. What we did not have was a website that reflected any of that.

We still do not need one in the narrow commercial sense. The order book looks after itself, as it always has. But it felt like time to stop spending energy explaining the gap and to use this domain for what it was always intended for.
